DigitalOcean Rolls Out Fix for Virtual Server Data Leak

Customers of a New York based cloud hosting startup have noticed data belonging to other customers’ stored in their virtual machines, and DigitalOcean rolled out a fix on Tuesday to the small percentage of customers that have had their data exposed.

According to a report by Wired on Tuesday, the problem started in mid January when DigitalOcean introduced a new SSD service. DigitalOcean CEO Ben Uretsky says that the code that securely deletes the data was not being activated under the new SSD storage plans. The issue was discovered by a customer last week who noticed data from a previous user stored on his virtual server.

Uretsky tells Wired that a maximum of 3 percent of DigitalOcean’s customer base have been affected by the data leak. The company has set up nearly 140,000 cloud servers.

"As of today, Tuesday, April 2nd at 2:18:54PM EST, we implemented a fix which has been deployed to all hypervisors resolving this rare case from reoccurring," DigitalOcean said in a blog post. "Now all new virtual servers come with a blank disk ensuring there is no way to read previous data. It also ensures that any customer that processed a destroy prior to this fix will also not be affected since the data will be wiped before the new virtual server is created."

The data breach would be a setback for any service provider, but more so in this case since DigitalOcean is such a new company, launching only 18 months ago. When trying to compete with other cloud computing providers, even a minor data leak can tarnish a brand, and waiting a few months to discuss a known problem is not the best way to establish a trusting relationship with clients.

DigitalOcean targets web developers with cloud computing plans that start at $5 per month, and was an exhibitor at SXSW this year.

There is clearly a demand for SSD hosting plans as within the past few days alone two web hosts have launched SSD cloud hosting plans, including WiredTree and Ubiquity Servers, respectively.
